Strange Fruit was written by American teacher Abel Meerpol in reaction to the lynchings of African Americans in the 1930's. Billie Holiday who brought the song to an international audience is represented here by her signature gardenias.

Painted in 2015 when Polly was Artist in Residence at Cheltenham Jazz Festival.
